About the Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens

The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED is a versatile standard zoom for Nikon DX (APS-C) DSLRs. Its 18–70mm range gives roughly the same view as a 27–105mm lens on full frame, covering wide-angle interiors and landscapes through to flattering portraits and tighter details. An ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element helps control colour fringing, and the Silent Wave Motor focuses quickly and quietly with full-time manual override. It was widely sold as the kit lens for cameras such as the D70 and D200, and remains a sensible upgrade from an 18-55mm for anyone wanting more reach without carrying a second lens.

Compatibility

Fits Nikon F-mount cameras. On DX (APS-C) DSLRs it covers 18–70mm; on full-frame and FX bodies it can be mounted but the image circle only covers the DX area. AF-S lenses autofocus on bodies without a built-in focus motor, such as the D40, D60, D3000 and D5000 series. Uses 67mm filters.

Questions about this model

Does the 18-70mm autofocus on my Nikon D3200 or D5100?

Yes. It is an AF-S lens with a built-in Silent Wave Motor, so it autofocuses on Nikon bodies that lack a screw-drive focus motor.

Is the 18-70mm better than the 18-55mm kit lens?

It gives noticeably more reach at the long end (70mm versus 55mm), a slightly faster maximum aperture and ED glass, while staying a similar size.

Will it work on a full-frame Nikon?

It can be mounted on FX bodies, but as a DX lens it only covers the smaller APS-C image circle, so you would need to use crop mode or accept vignetting.
